Commercial Achievement

When Aaliyah sang “Journey to the Past,” the animated film Anastasia’s nominated theme song, in 1997, she further increased her notoriety. She also sang the song during the 1998 Oscar telecast. The song “Are You That Somebody?” from her subsequent soundtrack for the Eddie Murphy-starring 1998 film Dr. Dolittle reached No. 1 on the R&B charts, became a major crossover smash, and garnered Aaliyah her first Grammy Award nomination.

Developing Film Career

In the 2000 action smash Romeo Must Die, in which she co-starred with martial arts superstar Jet Li in a Romeo and Juliet-inspired tale set in contemporary Los Angeles, Aaliyah made her acting debut. She also served as the soundtrack’s executive producer and sang the popular song “Try Again,” for which she received two MTV Music Video Awards for Best Female Video and Best Video From a Film in addition to a second Grammy nomination.

Aaliyah, her third album, debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard album list when it was released in July 2001. She starred as the titular character in the 2002 film Queen of the Damned, which was adapted from Anne Rice’s best-selling book of the same name. When she agreed to take part in two future sequels to the popular sci-fi thriller The Matrix, starring Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne, she pulled off a significant casting coup.

Death

On August 25, 2001, Aaliyah tragically lost her life when a small Cessna passenger plane carrying the singer and her video crew crashed and caught fire shortly after departure from Abaco Island in the Bahamas, where they had just finished working on a video. The destination of the flight was Miami, Florida. A ninth passenger passed away at a Bahamian hospital after passing away earlier. Aaliyah and seven other passengers, including the pilot, were thought to have passed away instantly. Aaliyah passed away when she was 22 years old.
