Early Years and Family of Alex Cora
Alex was born to parents Jose Manuel Cora and Iris Amaro in Caguas, Puerto Rico, on October 18, 1975. He shared his upbringing with his sisters Lydia and Iris, as well as his brother Joey Cora, who was ten years his senior.

The Minnesota Twins had already selected him in the twelfth round of the 1993 Major League Baseball draft, but he decided to play for the University of Miami instead.
Alex was named to the College World Series all-tournament team in 1995 and 1996 while he was a student at Miami. They won the championship in 1996, but Louisiana State University ultimately won it.
He was considered by Baseball America to be the top defensive college prospect going into the 1996 First-Year Player Draft. After that, he was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the third round of the 1996 amateur draft. Later, he was transferred and assigned to the minor level Vero Beach Dodgers.

On June 7, 1998, he had the good fortune to make his MLB debut early while playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers against the Seattle Mariners.
