On May 30, 1988, Amanda Nunes, sometimes known as Lioness, was born in a small Brazilian hamlet outside of Salvador. Together with her two older sisters, Nunes was raised by her single mother. Of the three sisters, she was the youngest.

Strikeforce

Nunes made her Strikeforce debut on January 7, 2011, at the Strikeforce Challengers: Woodley vs. Saffiedine in Nashville, Tennessee, after winning five straight fights with determination and all by knockout.

On September 10, 2011, Nunes faced Alexis Davis at Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Kharitonov. Sadly, late in the second round, Nunes was defeated by TKO.

Nunes was supposed to play Milana Dudieva at Invicta FC 2: Baszler vs. McMann in July 2012. However, Dudieva withdrew from the battle because of her condition.

Leslie Smith was supposed to face Amanda Nunes in a later round.

Smith withdrew due to an injury as well, therefore Nunes ended up competing against Raquel Pa’aluhi. With a rear-naked choke maneuver in the opening round, Nunes gained the upper hand through a technical submission.

At UFC 163 in Brazil in August 2013, Nunes competed for the first time in the Octagon against Sheila Gaff. She won the bout by KOing the opponent.

At UFC Fight Night 31 in November 2013, Nunes fought Germaine de Randamie on her second UFC outing. She won the fight through first-round TKO, just like in her previous contest.

Nunes was chosen to replace injured Shayna Baszler in her third fight and promotion to the Ultimate Fighter Nations Finale against Sarah Kaufman.

Nunes had to deal with tougher opposition as the competition increased. Cat Zingano was Nunes’ opponent at UFC 178.

At UFC 196 on March 5, 2016, Nunes defeated Valentina Shevchenko by unanimous decision.

Bantamweight Champion

After compiling a three-fight winning streak, The Lioness was granted her first title shot in the UFC.

She defeated Miesha Tate in a match by submission early in the first round with knees and punches.

She made history in the UFC by becoming the first openly gay champion.

Nunes battled Cris Cyborg for the UFC Women’s Featherweight title by working hard and making an effort.

Nunes contributed to the outcome of the contest by eliminating Cyborg in the first round in just 51 seconds. She was crowned the new UFC Women’s Featherweight Champion as a result of this victory.

She also became the first woman in UFC history to simultaneously hold championship belts in several classes thanks to the victory. The Performance of the Night award was among the many accolades that came with this victory.
