Education

Makurat studied at the University of Connecticut. She went to the Sports Champion School where she completed her high school education.

Professional Career of Anna Makurat

In 2013, Anna Makurat began her career. She began with the young organizations at the BAT Sierakowice club.

Before coming to UConn, she played against women in Poland’s top professional league while a teenager, and she is anxious to prove to everyone that she has the mentality and skill to play like the poised professional. Before she came at Storrs last summer, her coach, Auriemma, remarked that the one quality she liked most about her was that she was a complete professional who did not get distracted.

During pickup games, her teammates raved about how deadly her 3-point shot was.

Women basketball at UConn

It’s not exactly thought of as an easy place for a first-year student to play women’s basketball at UConn.

Breanna Stewart battled through her rookie season and into the postseason, while current teammates Crystal Dangerfield and Megan Walker did not start to consistently contribute until their sophomore years.

The adjustment from high school to college ball is challenging enough without having to worry about playing for the finest program.

However, some athletes can rise above all of that and be a starter right away, like Christyn Williams did last season. Geno Auriemma anticipates Anna Makurat, a freshman from Poland, to fit into the latter category.

Makurat competed for Arka Gdynia in the Polish professional league Basket Liga Kobiet prior to joining UConn.

Numerous WNBA players, including Rebecca Allen of the New York Liberty and former Husky Tiffany Hayes of the Connecticut Sun, have played in the league.

Even though Makurat only played basketball during summer workouts at UConn, she was familiar enough with the game to compare it to the Polish league.

Makurat should have stayed in her native country as she began her professional career at the age of 19 and was already participating in a professional league. However, the best option isn’t always the easiest.

To pursue your dreams, you occasionally need to step outside of your comfort zone, she advised. It has always been my goal to play basketball here, to compete, and to do so at the top level.

Makurat is expected to be a quick addition for the Huskies with a desire to hit it from a powerful and deep court vision. Well, at least the increase of offense has a quick impact.

Performance in Recent Games

Anna Makurat handled her situation better than most last season. By the end of the regular season, the Huskies’ first player from Poland had figured out what was required of her and was performing well

Makurat averaged 7.9 points per game last season, was second on the club in assists (105) and tied for third in steals (47).

The first three games of her career saw her shoot a combined 1-for-13 and miss all ten of her 3-point attempts. It was difficult for her to adapt her plodding movement to the much faster American tempo of play.

A little bit of pressure to make more shots and games just made her confidence worse. Anna has earned the following accolades as of May 1st, 2019:

Anna The New And Improved

Anna is very different, according to her coach, Auriemma.

She appears to be an entirely different athlete and person. Her level of preparedness is a complete 180 (degree) turnaround from last year.”

You can see that she has spent a few weeks in Poland with the national squad. She moves at such a rapid speed and is so upbeat (it has improved). The majority of it is better.

After the players returned to campus, Olivia Nelson-Ododa, who had worked with Makurat in a four-person pod, commented that she unquestionably looked more at ease and in shape.

The most exciting thing, in my opinion, is watching how diligently she worked during the offseason and at home, said Nelson-Ododa. It’s entertaining to watch her become more at ease. I can’t wait to watch how she does in the game this season.”

She claimed that the previous year, she felt out of shape and, as a result, worried more about being weary on the court than she did about basketball and the things she should be doing.

Makurat had a reputation as an excellent shooter when she arrived after having played professionally in Poland, but she has made just 31% of her shots (9 of 32 from 3-point range) and only scores 4.2 points on average per game.

She has, however, shown the ability to move the ball. She shares second place on the squad in assists with her 26.

Highlights and Success

  • All-Freshman Team of the American Athletic Conference (2020)

Following the Covid-19 incident, practices

She had turned the corner into an elite player by the time the postseason was abruptly cut short by concerns about the COVID-19 epidemic, despite there still being inconsistencies in her game.

I definitely started to feel more at ease in the system, Makurat stated. And I have now started acting in court as I am capable of acting. I didn’t second-guess myself or overthink anything.

That is, she played basketball as well as her physical condition would allow for the moment. She then went back home and began to alter her physical appearance in order to maximize her chance at attending UConn.

Anna Makurat

The Huskies’ schedule will strengthen in the new year with contests against Top 25 teams at Baylor (Jan. 9), Tennessee (Jan. 23), Oregon (Feb. 3) and South Carolina (Feb. 10).

This opening phase of the season has been a tremendous learning experience for Makurat. After struggling through an early shooting slump in which she missed her first 11 shots, she was benched after just five games.

Spending the majority of the spring and part of the summer at home helped her become in better shape, which can only be beneficial.
