Robinson was raised in Silver Spring, Maryland, starting at the age of four after her mother, a cancer researcher, accepted a job there. She went to Maryland’s Academy of Holy Cross, White Oak Jr. High School, and Colesville Elementary School.

In 1971, Alvis enrolled at the University of Maryland to study economics and urban studies. She also participated in painting and dancing classes. In three years, she earned her undergraduate degree, and then she relocated to San Francisco and enrolled at Golden Gate University. She joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as the deputy director of the Office of Atmospheric Programs after finishing her studies in the late 1970s.

Robinson worked with the EPA for many years before leaving to pursue philanthropy. The Washington Metropolitan Scholars Program was established by her with the intention of assisting more African-American students in enrolling in prestigious schools and universities.
