He was born in Durban, South Africa, but when he was just 10 years old, his family moved to New Zealand. He was fascinated by cricket from an early age and spent his school years learning the sport from former Test cricketer Chris Kuggeleijn. Watling succeeded at Hamilton Boys’ High School where he went to school. In addition to representing England in the Under-19 Cricket World Cup in 2004, Watling and his team won the Gillette Cup twice. He scored 268 runs in six games, including half-centuries and centuries, for a world cup total that was above average.
Later, Watling was selected for the Northern Districts team and given the opportunity to make his first-class debut in 2004 as a wicket-keeper. He started out as the team’s opener before switching to starting the batting. Watling participated in his maiden Test match and made his international debut in December 2009. In the game against Pakistan, he participated and scored 18 and 60 points in the first and second innings, respectively.
In May 2012, at McLean Park in Napier, during a Test match against Zimbabwe, Watling scored his first century. On addition, he acted as the team’s captain in place of numerous players who were taking part in the Indian Premier League in 2015’s match between New Zealand and England and also on a test match against England at the Oval stadium in November 2019, Watling scored his first double century, becoming the first wicket-keeper batter for New Zealand and the ninth in the world to do so.
After the World Test Championships final against India in 2021, Watling has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.
