Andy Collins and Brooke Olzendam

Brooke Olzendam first met Andy Collins during his years in Southern California. She was working in television at the time and frequently commuted to Portland to host the “Talkin’ Ball” show.

Soon after, the two began dating, and Collins was a quarterback at the University of Oregon.

The couple married in 2011, nearly a year after they began dating. They married in Seattle and later moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Looking back, the two happened to meet one night at Nikki Beach, a bar in Venice. They both had no intention of being out that day, but Brooke was out because her friend wanted to explore L.A., and Andy was there to make sure his friend got a ride.

Anyway, the two saw each other for the first time and instantly clicked. They later shared a ride back to Andy’s house after they began talking and sharing their mutual interest in sports. They then exchanged phone numbers.

In fact, the couple only clicked and got together after a few intense days. As a result, on Valentine’s Day in San Francisco, Andy Collins made a move and proposed to Brooke.

Their wedding ceremony was attended by over 300 guests, but they did not have a proper honeymoon because Brooke had work to complete. However, the couple had begun their official honeymoon on one of the islands off the coast of Florida.

Andy’s Unexpected Death

Brooke Olzendam and Andy Collins stayed at a hotel after returning from their house hunt in August 2011. Andy was working out at the time, while Brook stayed in to iron the clothes.

After finishing her ironing task, she went downstairs to look for Andy after several unsuccessful phone calls.

Soon after, she noticed the fire truck and paramedics rushing over for assistance, and when she couldn’t see him, she returned to her room.

Then she got a call from one of the EMTs, who said Andy had passed out while on the treadmill. As she rushed in, a nurse was attempting to revive him as the ambulance arrived.

Despite the fact that no one said anything to her, she felt a chill run down her spine as she realized something was terribly wrong.

“Then there was a priest performing his last rites.” I just kept saying, ‘Please return.’ When they said he was gone, I was holding his hand.”

They revealed that Andy Collins died as a result of a heart attack. Andy’s autopsy report stated that arteries near his heart were smaller than average, which was the root cause of his death.

Following the Funeral

The funeral was held in Andy’s hometown of Zillah, Washington, a week after the incident. What was even more heartbreaking was that the couple had only been married for ten days at the time.

Brooke Olzendam was devastated by this incident, and she was on the verge of quitting her job. She stayed in bed for weeks, not even looking at her wedding photos.

Brooke’s mother assisted her in returning all of the wedding gifts during this time. She returned to the field almost seventeen days after her panic and breakdown, but this time she felt a calm she had never felt before.

Andy Collins was Occidental College’s three-time Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference offensive player of the year. He began his career as a transfer from the University of Oregon, where he played from 2004 to 2006.

He also competed for the United States in the Aztec Bowl. Andy had previously played for the New York Giants in the Arena Football League, as well as stints with the Los Angeles Avengers and Colorado Crush.

In Loving Memory of Andy Collins

In honor of her late husband, Brooke Olzendam launched a new campaign to raise awareness about the importance of AEDs and heart health. The Portland Trail Blazers raised $5,000 as she launched the campaign.

She also stated that she hoped to raise awareness about heart problems through her story. As a result, the campaign was dubbed “Brooke Hearts Your Heart.”
