One of the NBA’s top scorers in history is Buddy Hield. He represents the Indiana Pacers of the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a professional basketball player from the Bahamas.

Additionally, in 2016, he was the recipient of four of the most prestigious national player of the year honors: the Sporting News Player of the Year, John R. Wooden Award, Naismith Award, and Oscar Robertson Trophy.

Hield was selected by the New Orleans Pelicans with the sixth overall choice in the 2016 NBA Draft. In 2017, he was traded to the Sacramento Kings. He was dealt to the Indiana Pacers in 2022.

Hield is already the player with the fastest 1,000 three-point field goals made record in the league.

Childhood

While other kids in the Bahamas experimented with marijuana, dropped out of school, and loitered in the streets, Buddy Hield had discovered a purpose in basketball and a source of inspiration.

The sportsman started telling his family and friends that he wanted to play in the NBA when he was 11 years old, just like Kobe Bryant and other players he saw on television. Hield’s dream was dismissed by the majority of residents of Eight Mile Rock as unrealistic.

In the local high schools, construction workers, welders, and auto mechanics were all marketed as careers for teenage boys who were fortunate enough to graduate.

They didn’t attend college very often, and playing professional sports was practically unheard of. In reality, only two Bahamian-born players have made significant contributions to the NBA (Mychal Thompson and Rick Fox).

Buddy, on the other hand, didn’t seem to care about anything. In fact, he realized his aspirations by playing in the NBA league just ten years later.

Amateur Career

By helping his Jack Hayward High School basketball team win the Providence Holiday Tournament on a buzzer-beater, Hield showcased his early talent.

The Grand Bahamas High School Championships were another accomplishment he and his team accomplished. For his accomplishments, Hield was named an All Bahamian Brand All Bahamian Selection.

Following his accomplishments in The Bahamas, Hield received a scholarship offer from Sunrise Christian Academy in Bel Aire, a basketball prep school in a suburb of Wichita, Kansas.

The 6-foot-4 (1.93 m) guard was signed by Kyle Lindsted, a current Wichita State assistant and former Sunrise coach.

Hield led Sunrise Christian to the National Association of Christian Athletes national championship during his junior season, winning MVP honors in the process.

As a senior in 2011–2012, he scored 22.7 points on.491 shooting in 21.0 minutes per game. He attracted a lot of attention and decided to play for Oklahoma instead of Kansas.

College Career

Hield averaged 7.8 points per game as a freshman at Oklahoma, earning the title of Most Inspirational Player. He was voted second-team All-Big 12 as a sophomore after scoring 16.5 points, grabbing 4.4 rebounds, and committing 1.4 steals per game.

He improved his defense and broadened his offensive repertoire before his junior year to become a high-volume three-point shooter.

Hield averaged 17.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game while shooting 41% from the floor as a junior at Oklahoma. He led Oklahoma to a 24-11 record, good enough for a Sweet 16 spot.

He could have entered the 2015 NBA Draft, but he opted to stay for his final year. Both the Big 12 First Team and the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year were awarded to him.

After being selected to the First Team All-Big 12 squad, he was named Men’s Basketball Player of the Year for the Big 12 Conference.

Professional Career

On June 23, 2016, the New Orleans Pelicans picked Hield with the sixth overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft. The Pelicans acquired him on July 22, 2016.

On December 15, 2016, Buddy played his best game as a Pelican, outscoring the Indiana Pacers 102-95 with 21 points and five three-pointers.

On January 3, 2017, he received the Western Conference Rookie of the Month award for December.

In his first game for the Kings, a 116-100 victory over the Denver Nuggets, he came off the bench to score 16 points. He received the Western Conference Rookie of the Month award in March.

Hield started the first seven games of the 2017–18 campaign as the team’s sixth player before switching to the bench.

On November 25, 2017, in a 97-95 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, Hield had a career-high seven 3-pointers in addition to a season-high 27 points off the bench.

On February 28, 2021, he hit 1,000 3-pointers, doing so faster than any other player in history. It took him just 350 games to reach the milestone.

On February 8, 2022, Hield was traded to the Indiana Pacers. Hield made his Pacers debut on February 11, starting alongside Haliburton in a 120–113 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, recording a near triple-double with 16 points, eight assists, and nine rebounds.

What is the Physical Measurement of Buddy Hield?

Hield’s 6’5″ frame and 6’9″ wingspan put him in good shape to develop a reputation as a premier shooting guard. He possesses the physicality to be a formidable on- and off-ball defender.

Progression

Hield has worked hard to establish himself as one of the NBA’s top three-point shooters. Off the court, he’s a tireless worker who has shown the ability to play long stretches at small forward.

Hield set a new personal high in his fifth NBA season, averaging 10.2 3-point attempts per game. Those attempts were third-most in the league, trailing only Stephen Curry and Damian Lillard.

He shoots 39.6 percent when he’s just cruising the perimeter, looking for catch-and-shoot opportunities.

When he dribbles once, Buddy shoots 38.7 percent, and when he dribbles twice, he shoots 48.9 percent. If you take more than two dribbles, your percentages will plummet.

Hield has made it clear that he wants to be more than just a catch-and-shoot wing complementing a rising star in De’Aaron Fox.

Family

Hield was brought up in Eight Mile Rock, a coastal region west of Freeport in the Bahamas’ West Grand Bahama District. He was the fifth of his mother, Jackie Braynen’s seven children.

Hield was 11 years old when Jackie divorced his father, Vincent, and the family moved into her mother’s house. The house was small.

Jackie, Hield, and his six siblings slept head-to-toe on a queen-sized mattress, with one of them almost always ending up on the floor.

Each sibling had their section of the room in which they stored their clothes and other belongings. Money was tight even with Jackie working three jobs.

Throughout it all, the family remained close and tight-knit. There were prayers (and sometimes a Bible study) every morning before breakfast, and chores and homework came before television.

If Jackie needed to spank her son from time to time to keep him in line, so be it. She was mostly known for her gentle nature.

Buddy recalls his mother telling her children to scoot over to the backseat of her van so she could offer rides to strangers walking in the sweltering summer heat.

And Jackie enjoyed cooking for the neighborhood kids on nights when they might not have eaten otherwise.

In November 2018, after his game against Los Angeles, the NBA star was spotted with his adorable baby daughter.

Passion For Basketball

Hield was so obsessed with basketball that he frequently paid (or bribed) his siblings to do his weekly chores so that he could spend more time on the court.

With only one TV in the house, he frequently awoke 30 minutes before dawn to seize control of the remote control and watch highlights from the previous night’s NBA games. Hield would leave his house for the park around 7 a.m. on other mornings.

Toting a water jug in one hand and bouncing a ball in the other, Hield would coax friends out of bed along the way before spending the entire afternoon practicing moves and footwork he’d seen from stars like LeBron James and Dwyane Wade on TV.

Despite how hard he worked on his own, Hield realized he needed assistance. He desired to learn the ins and outs of basketball from top-tier coaches who would expect the best from him.

That level of coaching did not exist in the Bahamas, where youth-league games were more akin to pickup games.

However, later Jackie and Richard flew, then the head coach at Sunrise Christian Academy, to Wichita with Buddy in August to assist him in settling into his new home.
