James “Buster” Douglas is the son of William “Dynamite” Douglas and Lula Pearl. On April 7, 1960, he was born in Columbus, Ohio. Buster was raised in the Windsor Terrace section of Columbus.

He participated in basketball and football while a student at Linden McKinley High School. Buster then played basketball in Coffeyville, Kansas for the Coffeyville Community College Red Ravens. Additionally, he went to Sinclair Community College. A basketball scholarship was later awarded to Douglas by Mercyhurst University.
