Career in College

He was a backup point guard for the Bruins in the 2005–06 campaign before replacing Jordan Farmar as the starter the following year.

He received the MVP title at the Maui Invitational Tournament in December 2006, and on December 4 and February 18, 2007, he received the Pacific-10 Conference Player of the Week honor.

During the 2006–07 season, Collison led the Pacific–10 Conference with 2.2 steals per game. Additionally, Darren had a 444 3-point field goal percentage and a 5.7 assist average, which was second in the Pac-10.

Collison returned to UCLA for his junior and senior years, participating in a combined 142 games there for a school record.

In his senior season in 2008–09, when he averaged 4.7 assists, 14.4 points, and 1.6 steals per game, he was chosen for the All–Pac-10 team.

He ranked first in the league for free throw percentage and seventh for assists, steals, and the ratio of assists to turnovers.

Collison was given the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Trophy that year, which is given to the best college player who is 6 feet, or 1.83 meters, or shorter. He and Josh Shipp shared the honor of being the Bruins’ Most Valuable Player (MVP).

Season 2009–2010 of a professional career

The New Orleans Hornets selected Collison with the 21st overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft.

He finished fourth in the NBA Rookie of the Year voting. In 37 games during his rookie NBA season, he averaged 18.8 points and 9.1 assists.

During the 2009–10 season, Collison became the first rookie to record a triple-double. He is a part of the NBA All-Star squad for the New Orleans Pelicans in 2010–2011.

2010–2012 period

On August 11, 2010, a four-team, five-player deal saw the New Jersey Nets get Troy Murphy, the Houston Rockets acquire Courtney Lee, the New Orleans Hornets acquire Trevor Ariza, and the Hornets send Collison and James Posey to the Indiana Pacers.

Season 2012–2013

On July 12, 2012, Collison and Dahntay Jones were exchanged for Ian Mahinmi by the Dallas Mavericks. Jason Kidd, a free agent who left the Mavericks, was replaced as the team’s starting point guard by Collison.

Collison was a key contributor to Dallas’ 4-1 start in 2012–13, but he underperformed as they lost 8 of their following 11. Collison played in the team’s first 14 games before being substituted for for one game.

Dallas signed Derek Fisher after he missed a few of his subsequent games due to a sprained right middle finger. Fisher started the Mavericks’ first game while Collison sat on the bench.

Season 2013–2014

On July 10, 2013, Collison and the Los Angeles Clippers came to an agreement. Chris Paul, another Clippers player, was backed up by him once more.

With a damaged shoulder that kept him out of 18 games, Collison entered the lineup and, shockingly, averaged 6.5 assists and 13.5 points in 32.6 minutes.

Coach Doc Rivers credited Darren Collison’s performance as being “the key” as the Clippers went 12-6 during that span and “weathered the storm” without their All-Star point guard.

In game four of their series against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the second round of the NBA Playoffs in 2014, the Clippers overcame a 22-point hole to tie the game and the series at 2-2.

Amazingly, Collison helped the leadership team by scoring 12 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter.

Season 2014–2017

On July 12, 2014, Collison agreed to a three-year, $16 million deal with the Sacramento Kings. The Clippers were unable to satisfy the terms of the pact or the start time, therefore the Kings granted him the starting point guard position.

On December 27, 2014, Collison scored a season-high 27 points and dished out ten assists in a 135-129 overtime victory over the New York Knicks.

On February 26, 2015, a right hip flexor injury was determined to keep him out for three to six weeks.

Collison, though, was punished with an eight-game suspension to start the 2016–17 campaign after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor domestic abuse allegation.

(2017) 2017–2019

On July 7, 2017, Collison re-joined the team he previously played for when he signed with the Indiana Pacers. He had knee surgery in early February 2018 and made his comeback for the Pacers in mid-March.

In addition, Collison lost two to three weeks of playing time due to the injury and treatment.

After consistently improving his three-point shooting throughout the course of his career, he led the league in 2017–18 with a career-best 3-point percentage of 47 percent.

At the end of the 2018–19 campaign, he averaged 11 points and six assists.

On June 28, 2019, Collison unceremoniously declared his retirement from the NBA. He retired as a Jehovah’s Witness citing religious reasons.
