Douglas Lima was born to Fausto Lima and Cologera Lima in Goiania, Brazil, on January 5, 1988. Lima relocated to Georgia in the USA, where he attended Joseph Wheeler High School before earning his diploma.

He started his mixed martial arts training with American Top Team, which was established by Dan Lambert in 2001, together with his brother Dhiego Lima. Lima defeated Albert Steinbeck prior to making his professional debut, resulting in a rear-naked chokehold submission.
