If you were a BMX enthusiast in the 1980s, you should be familiar with the name ZEddy King. Before quitting at age 24 in 1989, he was one of the best BMX riders in the history of the sport.
The old school BMX rider, also known as Eddy the King and Silver Bullet, was one of the sport’s swiftest riders in 1983. The same year, he also received the Rookie of the Year award.
The Eddy King is renowned for his incredible sibling combo with his brother Mike King and Harry Leary, a member of the Diamondbacks. Dynamic Duo was the name of the group.

Eddy’s parents relocated to Chula Vista, California, when he was six years old in search of better chances and a future.

How did he start Racing Career?

After a few times of watching the race, he decided that he wanted to participate rather than just watch.
Eddy, however, was unable to pedal a bicycle. He picked it up on his own. The professional racer claims that when he first started riding, he frequently fell off, but after a few falls, he eventually learned how to ride.
His first racing bicycle cost him US$ 29.95 and was purchased from K-mart in December 1974.
The bike, he claimed, had a bull horn handlebar, short cranks, a banana seat, and street tires.
Then he put knobby tires on the street tires. Additionally, he added motocross bars and redesigned the banana seat. He desired for his bicycle to resemble the motorbikes he used to see at races.
Eddy responded that he never gave motorcycle racing much thought since he was too busy focusing on BMX when asked if he ever wanted to race them instead of bicycles.
But he also stated that although riding a bicycle since it was less expensive than other options, he had grown to like it over time.
Eddy had a distinct vision of himself as a professional cyclist, and he quickly began his professional career.
The First Race and Sponsor
Eddy ran in his first race when he was ten years old. He participated in the race and won it in the nine- and ten-year-old age groups.
Following his outstanding debut, he was then sponsored by S & W Bike Shop during his second race a year later.
Eddy was relieved to learn that he was sponsored and that the sponsor would pay for his race expenses.
Eddy didn’t want his race-related expenses to disturb his parents. He was finding it difficult to compete in the race because it would be expensive to upgrade and repair the bicycle parts.
Professional Career
DiamondBack began supporting Eddy’s professional career in 1980. Eddy was also sponsored by DiamondBack for the whole of his professional cycling career.
Additionally, he was 16 years old when he earned the Over Expert Grand National Champion title in 1981.
He won titles like Expert Grand National Champion and Expert National No. 3 in the league a year later, when he was 17 years old.
On March 26, 1983, Eddy made his professional cycling racing debut. He competed in National Bicycle League races as a professional. He was unable to complete the event, nevertheless, due to his collision with the photographer.
Both fortunately avoided injury, but Eddy was unable to complete the race. Eddy did, however, return home with the US $25 in his pocket rather than without anything. He was earning it as a professional racer.
He competed in the American Bicycle Association Wheaties Gold Cup Qualifier the following month, finishing A Pro Main and earning his first professional victory.
Anabolic Steroids
Eddy King acknowledged using anabolic steroids to compete in the August 1987 issue of BMX Action, along with Harry Leary and four other people. As BMX tracks at the time were more concerned with the power racer than the agile racer with good jumping skills.
Injury
Eddy broke his right foot on March 7, 1987, at the ABA Gilley’s Nationals in Pasadena, Texas. During the race, he collided with someone, who then ran over his foot, seriously injuring it.
The same year, in Palm Springs, California, Eddy also sustained a hand injury while competing in the inaugural Palm Springs Aerial Tramway Gravity Powered Vehicle (GPV) and Ramp Jam.
Eddy King was flown to the hospital after a bad bike accident in 2013. He suffered a severe spinal cord injury and spent several months paralyzed.
At Big Bear, the catastrophe happened as the mountain was being backed. He was carrying a camelback and hydration pack when he crashed.
Eddy advises against packing the camelback with anything after the mishap.
Eddy regrets continuing to carry the shock pump in the camelback because it resulted in serious damage.
Due to the incident, the shock pump’s knob was bent, which led to a catastrophic spinal cord injury.

Retirement Life of Eddy King
At the age of 24, Eddy King ended his cycling career early. Following the termination of his contract with Diamondback, he retired in February 1989.
He responded that he was psychologically and physically exhausted and wanted to do something new when asked why he retired so early.
He felt that a quarter of his life had been spent just racing, thus he wanted to explore new facets of life.
On February 19, 1989, Eddy King took part in the ABA Winternationals as a Senior Pro before he retired. He finished the competition in ninth place.
Real Estate Career
Eddy King gave up competing in BMX races and concentrated on his real estate profession. Mike King, his brother, became well-known in BMX racing while he was retired.
When asked if he regretted quitting the BMX race, he responded that he never did. Instead, he took an early retirement because he needed a new direction in life, which his real estate career provided.
