Kotsay and his group agreed to a three-year, $29 million contract with the Oakland Athletics on July 9, 2002. On January 14, 2008, he was formally dealt to the Atlanta Braves along with $5.3 million of his $7.3 million salary for Jamie Richmond and Joey Devine.

The Chicago White Sox re-signed Mark in 2009 to a one-year, $1.5 million contract. In 2012, he agreed to a $1.3 million one-year contract with the Padres. In a similar vein, in 2001, Johnny Damon agreed to a four-year, $31 million deal with the Boston Red Sox. He is the spouse of Michelle Mangan.

On February 1, 2011, Kotsay agreed to a one-year deal with the Milwaukee Brewers worth $800,000 (plus $450,000 in incentives). Kotsay did, however, agree to a $1.25 million, one-year contract with the San Diego Padres on November 15, 2011.
