On April 1, Kemba resigned from the University of Connecticut and declared for the 2011 NBA Draft. The Charlotte Bobcats picked him with the ninth overall pick.

On January 28, 2012, he defeated the Washington Wizards and recorded his first triple-double with 20 points, 11 assists, and 10 rebounds.

During All-Star Weekend, Kemba took part in the 2012 Rising Stars Challenge.

Later, Kemba defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves to win his first game in the NBA. He finished with 22 points on 9 of 19 shooting, five rebounds, four assists, and four steals.

He averaged 17.7 points, 5.7 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and two steals per game throughout the course of the 2012–13 campaign.

On December 9, 2013, Kemba scored 31 points, 27 of which came in the second half, to help the Bobcats defeat the Golden State Warriors 115-111.

On February 19, 2014, he helped the Los Angeles Lakers defeat the Detroit Pistons 116-98 with 24 points, five rebounds, and a career-high 16 assists.

He was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week after posting averages of 22.5 points, 8.8 assists, and 5.5 rebounds over the course of one week.

It was changed from Charlotte Bobcats to Charlotte Hornets. On October 29, Kemba defeated the Milwaukee Bucks 108-106 in the first game of the 2014–15 season. He ended with 26 points, five assists, and six rebounds.

With 1.6 seconds remaining, he made a three-pointer to send the game into overtime and then made the game-winning jumper. He agreed to a four-year, $48 million contract with the Hornets the next day.

On December 27, Kemba scored a career-high 42 points against the Orlando Magic, and his 35 points in the second half set a Charlotte Hornets franchise record for most points scored in a half.

He became one of only four players in Charlotte Hornets franchise history to score 30 or more points in three or more straight games in three games played between January 3 and January 7 with scores of 30, 33, and 31.

After undergoing successful surgery to repair a torn lateral meniscus in his left knee on January 28, 2015, Kemba was out for six weeks.

On November 23, 2015, he scored a then-season-high 39 points against the Sacramento Kings.
