Ernie Butler, a former boxing champion, taught Larry Holmes how to punch for the first time. He assisted in honing his skills, and after winning 19 of his 22 fights, he became well-known as an amateur boxer. In 1973, he decided to turn pro.
He switched trainers while getting advise from a wide range of people, including Don King. He sparred frequently with renowned fighters like Mohammad Ali, Joe Frazier, and Jimmy Young but avoided high-profile fights. When he defeated Ernie Shavers in March 1978, he gained notoriety. After that, he defeated Ken Norton in a noteworthy bout by decision after fifteen rounds. He kept the WBC championship until 1983.
He subsequently won the IBF title, which he successfully defended three fights to finish his career 48-0. But in September 1985, Michael Spinks handed him a 15-round decision victory, and six months later, he suffered a similar defeat.
