Professional Life

In 1993, Lanzini competed for the neighborhood club Club Academia Kaly de Ituzaingó, where he excelled in indoor soccer football categories. Ramón Maddon intended to take Lanzini to Boca Juniors for a test match after spotting players like Juan Román Riquelme, Carlos Tevez, and Esteban Cambiasso, but the young Lanzini declined, stating that he only wanted to play for the team he supported: Club River Plate

He was sent to River Plate in 2002. Prior to being hired by Pedro Vega, a former player and coach of lower club categories, he started his training and employment as a playmaker at small levels. With just two goals separating him from colleague striker Leonardo Salguero, who had 11 goals, Lanzini’s eighth division side won the divisional championship in 2008. He concluded the season with nine goals. In the Superclásico on November 2, 2008, River Plate defeated Boca Juniors 3-0 with goals from Lanzini and another player.

For the 2010 winter preseason, Lanzini was chosen by River Plate’s first team coach, ngel Cappa, to play in a number of games in Salta Province. In a 3-0 friendly victory over Central Norte, Lanzini made his unofficial debut by replacing Ariel Ortega in the second half. The press and the audience praised Lanzini’s performance in a subsequent friendly game against Juventud Antoniana.

The 2010 winter preseason performance of Lanzini satisfied his coach. He finally made his debut on August 8, 2010, in the 2010 Torneo Apertura’s opening game against Tigre. Facundo Affranchino took over for Lanzini at halftime as River Plate triumphed 1-0.

He asked his coach, Matas Almeyda, if he might wear the storied number 10 of the team for his comeback, and Almeyda consented. Lanzini, though, was unable to land a starting position under Almeyda and was left to sit out games.

In May 2016, Lanzini was selected for Argentina’s preliminary 35-man Olympic squad. Due to a knee injury sustained during training in Miami, Florida, he was forced to leave the team in July 2016. He then returned to London for treatment at West Ham United.

In May 2017, Lanzini was named to the first Argentina squad under new manager Jorge Sampaoli for upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Singapore. On June 9, against Brazil at the MCG in Melbourne, Australia, Lanzini made his full international debut, coming on in place of Ever Banega in the 81st minute of Argentina’s 1-0 victory. He scored his first goal for his country on March 23, 2018, when Argentina defeated Italy 2-0 at Manchester’s Ethiad Stadium.
