It’s a Family Thing

The LaFleur family has a long history of coaching. Matt’s parents were also involved in the coaching industry.

Physical education classes were taught by Denny and Kristi LaFleur. Up until their retirement in 2015, they worked as coaches at Mount Pleasant High School in their native Michigan.

Additionally, in 2017 they served as the grand marshals of the homecoming procession at Mount Pleasant High School.

At Central Michigan University, Denny worked as a defensive assistant for a very long time. In the 1970s, he also played linebacker for Michigan.

Matt played football with his father for hours at a time. He used to observe the game with Denny.

In a previous interview, Denny claimed that his elder child had collegiate experience from a young age because he accompanied his father to all of the home games, away games, and bowl games.

Kristi, Matt’s mother, instilled optimism in him. She used to support her spouse on the sidelines when he played.

In actuality, she was Mount Pleasant High’s competitive cheerleading coach. She had a reputation for taking untrained children and molding them into teams that would consistently advance to the state championships.

According to Matt, the faith and optimism of his mother toward those children taught him the value of optimism. He saw how those kids’ play and self-confidence improved as a result of positive reinforcement.

Greater Than That

Third generation coach in the family, Matt. In the 1960s and 1970s, his grandfather Bob Barringer worked as a coach at Loy Norrix High School in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He spent nine arduous years working there.

He passed away in 2010. After his passing, The Kalamazoo Gazette ran a feature describing him as a demanding coach who would always push his players and make them tough.

Barringer’s former pupil described how he captured his interest. Barringer informed him that he and his father would be selling popcorn in the stands.

He was unaware that his father was not in fact a popcorn vendor. The coach was then completely focused.

No one will listen to you if you are not tough, thus Matt must have inherited some of his grandfather’s hardness. If a person is unable to transition from being harsh to being soft, they cannot perform a job like Matt’s.

Additionally, it calls for you to be tough and strict with a dash of tenderness. Mike, Matt’s younger brother, also coaches football.
