Unfortunately, Mitrione injured his foot during his senior year, ruling him out of the NFL draft. Matt, on the other hand, didn’t stay away from football for long. In the 2002 season, the New York Giants offered Matt a UDFA contract.
Unfortunately, he re-injured his foot in a playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers in 2003, necessitating yet another operation.

“Jayson invited me to fight on an MMA card he was promoting, and I said, ‘Yeah, that’d be fun,'” he explained. “I got hurt and couldn’t fight, but I got involved in the sport.” I began training and six months later, I was on a show called The Ultimate Fighter.”
In addition, Matt competed in the tenth season of The Ultimate Fighter in 2010. Rashad Evans, his coach, gave him the unofficial nickname “Meathead” shortly after joining the show.
