Matt began his martial arts training as a child and competed in Toughman competitions in high school. In fact, he came in second place in that Toughman competition. His toughness and athleticism quickly drew a lot of attention. Similarly, Matt received a football scholarship from the Purdue University football program as a result of his outstanding football abilities.

Matt competed against elite college programs on some of the nation’s biggest stages after enrolling at Purdue. Not to mention that he started 35 consecutive games at defensive tackle for the Boilermakers during his college football career. Matt stated,

“I had the opportunity to play in two Alamo Bowls with Purdue, one against Kansas State and Michael Bishop and one against Oklahoma State.”

“I had the opportunity to play at Michigan, Wisconsin, and Iowa.” Some of the country’s largest stadiums. It was incredible, and those are some of my favorite memories of playing in college.”

Football Career of Matt Mitrione

Matt began his career as a professional football player before becoming the MMA fighter we know today. He was a defensive tackle for the Purdue University Boilermakers from 1998 to 2001. Matt had 165 tackles for the Boilermakers, including 50 tackles for loss.

Unfortunately, Mitrione injured his foot during his senior year, ruling him out of the NFL draft. Matt, on the other hand, didn’t stay away from football for long. In the 2002 season, the New York Giants offered Matt a UDFA contract.

Unfortunately, he re-injured his foot in a playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers in 2003, necessitating yet another operation.

He had to have seven surgeries on that foot and was on crutches for 16 months. Maat was released by the Giants later that year and had brief stints with the San Francisco 49ers and Minnesota Vikings before being released by the Vikings six weeks later.

During a conversation with his close friend Jayson Werth, Matt Mitrione was introduced to the world of MMA.

After being introduced, he was heavily influenced and relocated to Indianapolis with his family to begin his full-time training to compete in MMA.

“Jayson invited me to fight on an MMA card he was promoting, and I said, ‘Yeah, that’d be fun,'” he explained. “I got hurt and couldn’t fight, but I got involved in the sport.” I began training and six months later, I was on a show called The Ultimate Fighter.”

In addition, Matt competed in the tenth season of The Ultimate Fighter in 2010. Rashad Evans, his coach, gave him the unofficial nickname “Meathead” shortly after joining the show.

Finally, at The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights finale, he made his professional MMA debut, defeating Marcus Jones via KO early in the second round.

Similarly, he faced fighter Kimbo Slice in his next fight at UFC 113 in Montreal. Matt knocked Kimbo down with leg kicks and eventually beat him with punches in the second round to improve to 2-0 on the pro circuit.

Following his victory, Matt faced Joey Beltran at UFC 119 on September 25, 2010, and won the Fight of the Night award. Similarly, Matt began an extremely successful MMA career as he continued to win fights.

Matt faced Travis Browne on January 17, 2016, and lost via TKO in the third round, suffering a gruesome eye injury and two eye pokes from Browne throughout the fight.

It was Matt’s final fight under his contract, and he later chose to enter the free agent market.

Matt Mitrione suffered a horrific eye injury in his heavyweight division loss to Travis Browne, which became controversial after a photo of his swollen eyes went viral on social media.

Furthermore, the swelling was so severe that Mitrione couldn’t see out of his right eye. Similarly, despite being cleared to fight by the doctor, he was rendered defenseless when Travis took him down to the canvas.

Later, Matt posted a picture of his swollen eye on Twitter, revealing that his orbital bone had been broken as a result of the eye poke.

Fortunately, Mitrione recovered quickly and returned to Octagon with the same clear vision she had before.

Matt faced Oli Thompson in his next fight, and won the back-and-forth fight via TKO in the second round, embracing his quick return to the Bellator cage.

Similarly, on February 16, 2018, Mitrione defeated Roy Nelson in the quarterfinals of the Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix tournament.
