Matthias Schoenaerts is a Belgian actor, graffiti artist, and film producer. He is widely recognized for his role as Bruno Von Falk in the 2015 movie Suite Francaise and Uncle Vanya in the 2018 Red Sparrow. He was named Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters back in 2015.
Matthias was born on 8th December 1977 in Antwerp, Flanders, Belgium. His father is Julien Schoenaerts who was an actor and mother, Dominique Wiche was a translator, costume designer, and French teacher. He also has a half-brother, Bruno Schoenaerts who is a lawyer. Furthermore, he graduated from The Academy of Dramatic Arts in Antwerp.
Biography
Schoenaerts was born in the Flemish (Dutch-speaking) part of Belgium, in the city of Antwerp. He is the son of actor Julien Schoenaerts (1925–2006) and costume designer, translator, and French teacher Dominique Wiche (1953–2016). He has a lawyer half-brother named Bruno Schoenaerts, who was born in 1953. Schoenaerts learned both Dutch and French as a child. He also speaks English well. He learned the language by watching American movies.
In 1987, when he was nine years old, he acted opposite his father in a stage version of The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. His father also directed the show. Dominique, his mother, was in charge of the costumes for the play.
As a teenager, he started making graffiti under the name “Zenith.” He even went to New York to work with the Bronx group TATS CRU. Some videos of Schoenaerts doing graffiti in Belgium can be found on YouTube.
Schoenaerts was almost good enough to play soccer professionally. He was on the roster of the Belgian team Beerschot AC, but he gave up when he was 16 years old. Schoenaerts said in 2013 that he likes the football team FC Barcelona from Spain.

Schoenaerts made his cinematic debut at the age of 13 with a small part in the 1992 Belgian film Daens, which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. His father also appeared in the movie, however they did not share any scenes.
European Film Promotion designated Schoenaerts as one of “Europe’s Rising Stars” in 2003.
After graduating from Antwerp’s Academy of Dramatic Arts, he appeared in a number of short and feature films. 2002: Dorothée Van Den Berghe’s Meisje (Girl); 2003: Tom Barman’s Any Way the Wind Blows; 2004: Roel Mondelaers & Raf Reyntjens’ sci-fi short film A Message from Outer Space, which Schoenaerts also produced.

In 2011, Schoenaerts starred in Bullhead, directed by Michal R. Roskam and nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. His work in the film earned him the FIPRESCI Award for best actor at the January 2012 Palm Springs International Film Festival. The panel lauded the actor’s “outstanding portrayal of an innocent and sensitive individual trapped in a body of abrasiveness.” Moreover, he received the Magritte Award for Best Actor.
