Former professional football player Merril Hoge spent almost ten years playing in the National Football League. He was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the tenth round of the 1987 NFL Draft.

Merril sustained a concussion while competing for the Bears in a preseason game in 1994. Five days later, over the phone, the team doctor gave him the all-clear to play.
