The Debate Over Mike Tirico

At ESPN, Mike Tirico’s career wasn’t without controversy.

Former New York Times writer Michael Freeman’s 2000 book ESPN: The Uncensored History and James Andrew Miller and Tom Shales’ 2011 book These Guys Have All the Fun both discuss allegations of sexual harassment. For instance, Tirico was given a three-month suspension from the network in 1992 as a result of several instances of attempted groping, sexual solicitation, and stalking of female coworkers.

After Matt Lauer and other prominent figures in the media sector were fired from NBC in late 2017 for sexual misconduct, the network said that it was aware of Tirico’s past when he was hired from ESPN and that Tirico had given assurances that he had changed. NBC doesn’t have any plans to replace him on the Olympic programming as a result. According to John Wildhack, a former ESPN executive who is also Syracuse’s sports director, “it occurred well over twenty years ago.” Since then, Mike has always been the epitome of a professional.
