Miroslava Vavrinec Federer was born in Bojnice, Slovakia, on April 1, 1978. Her parents left their country when she was two years old to settle in Switzerland.
Mirka attended her first tennis tournament in 1987. She was nine years old when she and her father traveled to Filderstadt, Germany. During the trip, she met Martina Navratilova, a former professional tennis player.
