Biography

On August 5, 1962, Patrick Aloysius Ewing was born in Kingston, Jamaica. He is 60 years old and a Leo by birth. He came from a Jamaican household at birth. And he was also conceived by his mother Dorothy Ewing and his father Carl Ewing. His mother was a homemaker who raised the family’s seven children while his father worked as a mechanic.

When he was seven years old, his parents moved to the United States. Although the family was struggling financially, Ewing and his siblings stayed on the island for four years until his parents were able to send each child to the United States. At the age of 11, Ewing and the rest of his family emigrated to America and made their home in a five-room cottage in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

He had never played basketball before, but he had been kicked out of cricket and soccer. But it was in a pick-up game with other neighborhood youngsters that he learnt how to play basketball. The boy, who was twelve years old and already six feet six inches tall, adapted to the game easily.

Education Background

In order to succeed, Ewing put in a lot of effort while attending Rindge and Latin School in Cambridge. Ewing tested out for the 1980 Olympic team while leading his team to three state championships on the court. Despite not being selected for the team, the young player benefited from the experience.

Ewing was also the first high schooler to take part in the basketball Olympic tryouts. Additionally, Petrick enrolled in the MIT-Wellesley Upward Bound Program, a college preparation program for high school students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Ewing’s diligence led to his acceptance to Georgetown University in Washington, DC.

However, despite Ewing’s brilliance on the court, his personal life was turbulent and difficult. Patrick’s mother suffered a heart attack and died in 1983. Patrick found out Sharon Stanford, his high school sweetheart, was expecting their child that same year. On May 21, 1984, Patrick Aloysius Ewing Jr. was born.

Professional Life 

Ewing quickly attained the position of team captain while competing at Georgetown. In three of the four seasons that Ewing was a member of the team, the Georgetown Hoyas advanced to the NCAA tournament final. The Hoyas won the NCAA title in 1984.

Ewing defeated seasoned competitor Hakeem Olajuwon to claim the title of Outstanding Star in the same championship. Ewing again auditioned for the American Olympic basketball team that year. This time, he was acknowledged for being a part of the team that had won the gold medal that particular year.

Ewing completed high school as promised to his mum. He declined a number of lucrative endorsement deals and professional baseball opportunities up until his graduation in 1985. The National Basketball Association had high demand for Ewing in that particular year. Following their victory in the Draft Lottery, the New York Knicks selected Ewing first overall.

Ewing averaged 20 points, nine rebounds, and two blocks per game in his first season despite dealing with numerous illnesses. Ewing’s accomplishment earned him the NBA Rookie of the Year honor and made him one of the best centers in the league. Ewing played for the New York Knicks for more than 15 years, winning games against players like Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Scottie Pippin. He was a part of the original “Dream Team” in the 1992 Olympic Games, a member of the All-NBA First and Second Teams, and an 11-time NBA All-Star.

In 2000, Patrick Ewing moved from the New York Knicks to the Seattle SuperSonics. After spending a year with the Seattle Sonics and another with the Orlando Magic, he announced his retirement. On September 18, 2002, Ewing announced his retirement from the NBA. He served as the Washington Wizards’ assistant coach during that season. On February 28, 2003, a ceremony at Madison Square Garden marked the retirement of Ewing’s “No. 33” jersey. Patrick was additionally enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008.
