Being the youngest athlete ever to be signed by the biggest sportswear company globally, at 11 years old, Nike says to me that Rodrygo Goes is going to become one of the best players in the future, if not the best.
Following in the footsteps of former legends of Santos, Pele, and Neymar, Rodrygo has raised the bar even further by joining one of the world’s biggest clubs, Real Madrid, at the tender age of 18.
As a result, hope and expectations for the Brazilian international are incredibly high. And I have full faith in the Sao Paolo native that he can become the best in the coming years.
That is in the future, and no one can predict the future last time I checked.
So, instead of wasting valuable time on what Rodrygo might become in the future, I will tell you about the journey of the 20-year-old from his Santos youth days to his present time at the Los Blancos.
But first, let’s get warmed up with some quick facts.
Rodrygo’s Childhood and Career
Rodrygo was born in Osasco, an industrial town in the state of Sao Paolo. When Goes was born, his parents were still in their twenties. As a result, the couple’s lives was first difficult.
Eric, the Real Madrid winger’s father, was a professional player in Brazil’s second level. As a result, Rodrygo was raised watching and playing football from the time he could remember.
The clever winger played for the Santos youth team, where he honed his god-given abilities among the likes of Pele and Neymar. Rodrygo led Santos U-13’s in scoring at the Sao Paolo State Championship with 20 goals during his time with the club.
What’s more astonishing is that Goes was just 11 years old when he played against opponents two years his senior.
As a result, Nike moved quickly to sign the Sao Paolo native before anyone else. Rodrygo was thus the youngest athlete ever signed by the American sportswear company.
Furthermore, Goes was selected the best player in the Copa Nike Tournament since he outperformed all other competitors.
As a result, Zico, one of the best players to ever wear Brazil’s famed yellow shirt, commented, “Rodrygo possesses a high level of technical skill and plays for the team.”
Following strong performances for Santos’ youth team, the Real Madrid winger was promoted to the reserve team, where he would further his development. Rodrygo would eventually make his professional debut for his youth club, Santos, following in the footsteps of Pele and Neymar.
Rodrygo’s Career and Statistics
Rodrygo may appear to have played at the highest level for many years, but this is not the case. Instead, the Brazilian international made his professional debut in 2017 with Santos, alongside former luminaries such as Neymar and Pele.
Goes, on the other hand, only made two appearances in his rookie season with Santos. The Brazilian winger, on the other hand, burst onto the scene in his second season.
For example, as a 17-year-old, he participated in 58 matches for Santos, scoring 12 goals and assisting five times.
Rodrygo’s individual effort in the Copa Libertadores versus Nacional in a 3-1 triumph was the season’s highlight.
As a result, Goes became the competition’s youngest player to score. The former Santos winger scored three goals and assisted on another in a 5-2 victory over Vitoria.
Rodrygo had made 80 appearances and scored 17 goals by the time Real Madrid rushed in and grabbed him.
But it wasn’t simply his goals that drew the attention of Los Blancos. Instead, the Santos winger’s skill and maturity above his years encouraged Real Madrid to sign him.
Madrid Real
On 15 June 2018, the football world was shocked when Real Madrid signed Rodrygo from Santos for an eye-watering €45 million. He will be at the club until 2025, according to his contract. As a result, many onlookers questioned Goes’ talent, primarily because he had only one full season with Santos.
Furthermore, the Real Madrid winger is only 20 years old, which adds to the scrutiny of the Los Blancos’ fee for the kid. Rodrygo did, however, somewhat justify his exorbitant fee when Goes scored a hat-trick in a 6-0 win over Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League.
In doing so, the then-18-year-old became the tournament’s first player born in the twenty-first century to score. Rodrygo has now appeared in 21 matches for Los Blancos, including nine for the B-team, scoring nine goals and assisting two more.
Not bad for a 20-year-old in his first season with one of the world’s most powerful clubs. In conclusion, I have no doubt that will be considered for the Ballon D’or prize in a few years.
International Career Opportunities
Following his strong achievements for the Santos Reserve side, the 20-year-old winger made his debut appearance for the Brazil U-17s in the Montaigu Tournament.
The Real Madrid winger was able to show off his natural skill to the rest of the world during this competition.
Rodrygo, for example, scored in his debut for the team in a 2-1 loss to Denmark. He added two more goals against the United States and Cameroon, bringing his total for the competition to three..
His senior squad debut, however, came in the most famous football rivalry on the world stage, Brazil vs. Argentina.
To clarify, Goes entered the game in the 70th minute to replace Chelsea attacker Willian. Despite the fact that Brazil lost the match 1-0, Rodrygo showed flashes of brilliance.
He has currently made two senior team appearances. However, given Goes’ talent and potential, no one will be surprised if he makes another 98 appearances for the Selecaos.
