DeAndre Hopkins‘ mom is truly a superwoman who withstood the test of faith. No matter how bad she fell, she made sure she got back up for her children.
Hopkin’s mom, Sabrina Greenlee, is a brave and marvelous soul. Sabrina is the mother of the six feet one-inch tall wide receiver for the Houston Texans.
She must be incredibly proud of Andre’s success, and likewise, Andre must be forever grateful for having such a supportive mother.
But their life was not a fairy tale in the past as it is now. There are a lot of dark times while Sabrina was raising Andre. To learn all about her past, stick with us until the end of this article.
Early Years of DeAndre Hopkins’ Mother
Sabrina Greenlee, Hopkins’ mother, was born to an alcoholic father, while her mother’s situation was even worse: she was a drug addict.
Sabrina was born on April 1st, 1970. South Carolina is where she was born and raised. She has been in abusive relationships since she was 14 years old.
“By the time I was 17, I’d been in the hospital three times,” Sabrina explained.
“I remember trying to take my senior pictures when I was 18 and not being able to because I had two black eyes and a broken collarbone that day,” she continued.
DeAndre Hopkins’ Mother Relationship and Children
Sabrina is not currently in a relationship. She had previously been in four different abusive relationships, all of which ended in divorce. Unfortunately, every man she developed feelings for did not know how to treat a woman.
DeAndre Hopkins’ mother has four children from four different relationships. DeAndre Hopkins, Kesha Smith, Marcus Greenlee, and Shanteria Cobb are her children.
Despite being legally blind, Sabrina worked tirelessly to provide a stable upbringing for her four children.
Harris Hopkins, Steve
In 1989, Sabrina Greenlee met Harris Steve Hopkins. Harris was 22 at the time, while she was 19. DeAndre Hopkins is the result of their relationship. He was born on June 6, 1992, in Central South Carolina. Andre, however, was not Sabrina’s first child.
Sabrina had two children from previous relationships before marrying Harris: Kesha Smith and Marcus Greenlee.
Sabrina met Steve Hopkins, a kind, loving, and caring man, for the first time in her life, but happiness was not written to last long in her face.
When DeAndre was born in 1992, Sabrina and Steve Hopkins were driving around in his Ford Mustang GTS when the car skimmed over a wet road, killing Mr. Hopkins.
The rain had made the road muddy and slippery. When Steve attempted to turn, his car hydroplaned and flipped three times before colliding with a guardrail on the driver’s side.
Fortunately, Sabrina did not sustain any serious injuries, but Steve Hopkins died eight days later. DeAndrea, the couple’s first child, was only five months old at the time.
The remaining siblings
Shanteria Cobb, the squad’s youngest member, was born in 1998. She now attends and plays basketball for Texas Southern University.
Kesha Smith also graduated from Southern Wesleyan University. She is currently employed by the Houston Wildcats of the Independent Women’s Football League. She works for them as a slot receiver and also as a basketball trainer on the side.
Marcus Greenlee also played high school football and basketball before enrolling at Georgia Military College.
DeAndre Hopkins’ Mother Is a Single Mother
Sabrina had to work two jobs because she was raising four children on her own. During the day, she worked as a low-level employee at an automotive plant, earning the minimum wage.
She’d be an exotic dancer at a bar when the night took over. Unfortunately, Sabrina was also the victim of an acid attack, which blinded her.
Her ex-other boyfriend’s girlfriend poured a mixture of bleach and lye on her face. The heinous crime occurred on July 20, 2002, after her then-boyfriend took her car without warning. So, of course, she called him and asked him to return the car.
She instructed him to drive her to a specific location where she would be visited by her boyfriend and his other girlfriend, Savannah Carlita Grant.
Savannah splattered lye and bleach on her face. Sabrina’s face immediately began to melt. Her skin started peeling off her face, chest, and neck. In an instant, her eyes were also blinded.
“And as I lie there, the first thing that comes to mind is, ‘Why would someone pour warm water over my face?'” she explained.
“But a couple of seconds later, I realized it wasn’t warm water because my skin was falling off my face, neck, chest, and back,” she continued.
Sabrina’s then-boyfriend drove her to a gas station after Savannah attacked her, where a gas station employee called 911.
Sabrina was airlifted to a burn center in Georgia and placed in a medically induced coma for two weeks.
Sabrina had skin graft surgery, in which healthy skin from her chest and back was transferred to her face.
Sabrina regained consciousness with a swollen face, blindness, and the inability to speak properly. Her eyes have undergone over 20 surgeries. Though not completely recovered, she did recover up to 60% of her vision. Unfortunately, she later lost her sight completely.
She had recovered from her wound following surgery, but the scars remained, reminding her of the day she was acid-attacked.
She became depressed as a result of the incident and became dependent on drugs and alcohol to alleviate her pain.
Savannah Grant, the woman who sprayed acid on her, was sentenced to 20 years in prison and is scheduled to be released on May 6, 2020.
“I was able to cope with being blind, the scars, and the ridicule,” Sabrina told ESPN in 2019. And I believe it gave me the confidence to eventually discover myself.”
