How did Steve get his start in skating?

At the age of twelve, Steve began to skate. He aspired to skateboard like Eddie Elguera, a skateboarding great, and looked up to him.

One day, his father took him skateboarding to a skatepark. He enjoyed doing it so much that he began to copy it using ramps he constructed himself.

But because he was using homemade boards that weren’t like skateboards and had nowhere to practice, it didn’t work out well.

Later, Caballero discovered that his neighborhood was getting a skateboard park, which was the best news for this ambitious skateboarder.

Early on, Steve excelled in skateboarding, but his academic performance was dismal. But Steve’s mother encouraged him to pursue a career as a professional skateboarder.

His mother used to wait by the skateboarding park where he practiced. His first skateboarding shoes and gear were purchased by her mother.

Ty Page Free Former, a wooden skateboard with sealed bearings and grip tape, served as his first board.

To keep him from getting wounded, her mother allowed him to wear hockey and soccer equipment.

However, his skating career didn’t start until 1978, two years later. His first supporter was Campbell Skate Park.

Career in Professional Skateboarding

In Escondido, California, in 1979, Steve competed in a national skate competition and came in fifth place. After observing his skating prowess, Powell Peralta and Stacy Peralta considered sponsoring him.
