Sushil Kumar

Former Indian wrestler Sushil Kumar Solanki is better known by his stage name Sushil Kumar. He rose to stardom after taking home four gold medals from the 2003 to 2009 Commonwealth Wrestling Championships. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he won silver in the 66-kilogram weight division, and he carried the Indian flag at the opening ceremony of the London Games.

His wrestler father and his cousin Sandeep encouraged him to start wrestling. Sushil Kumar began his training at the age of 14, and in 1998, he made his wrestling debut by taking home the gold at the World Cadet Games. At the 2014 Commonwealth Games, he took home the gold medal in the 74 kg weight category. In addition, Sushil made an appearance in 2012 in the reality program “Roadies 9.” He appeared on “The Kapil Sharma Show” and “Comedy Nights with Kapil” as well. Biography

The first day Sushil Kumar entered the world was May 26, 1983, in Delhi, India. He was born in a Hindu family under the real name Sushil Kumar Solanki. He is Asian by ancestry and Indian by nationality. Sushil recently celebrated becoming 39 years old in 2022, and according to his birthdate, he is a Gemini. His race is hence black. His mother, Kamla Devi, is a housewife, while his father, Diwan Singh, worked as a driver for MTNL Delhi.

Professional life

Sushil Kumar began his wrestling career in 1998 at the World Cadet Games, where he took home the gold in his weight division. In 2000, he earned another gold at the Asian Junior Wrestling Championship. Then, he earned a gold medal at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships in addition to a bronze medal in the Asian Wrestling Championships. During the 2003 World Championships, Kumar finished fourth. The Indian media, however, paid little attention to this because he performed poorly at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, finishing 14th in the 60 kg weight class.

He took seventh place in the 2007 World Championships, won gold medals at the Commonwealth wrestling competitions in 2005 and 2007, and won a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. He is the first individual to win two Olympic medals for independent India after winning a silver medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics. However, he was defeated by Doug Schwab in the first round of the 66 kg freestyle wrestling competition before falling to Andriy Stadnik in the second round. At the 2010 Global Wrestling Championships, Kumar became the first Indian to win a world wrestling championship after defeating Leonid Spiridonov 3:1 in the bronze medal match. He also defeated local favorite Alan Gogaev of Russia 3-1 in the 66 kg division final.

Additionally, on October 10, 2010, he took home a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games of 2010. They were held in Delhi. In the 66 kg freestyle wrestling finals, he defeated Heinrich Barnes 7-0. He was awarded a silver medal in the 2012 London Olympics after finishing second to Tatsuhiro Yonemitsu in the championship match. He had upset Akzhurek Tanatarov of Kazakhstan to get to the final amid some controversy. Also, He carried the Indian Olympic flag during the opening ceremony, becoming the first Indian since India’s independence to take home two individual Olympic medals.

He then won the 74 kg gold medal match against Qamar Abbas in 107 seconds by fall at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. Ongoing Cases

During a fight in the Chhatrasal Stadium on May 4, 2021, Sushil Kumar was detained in connection with the murder of former junior national wrestling champion Sagar Dhankhar. The Rohini court granted a six-day detention of Kumar to the Delhi police after Delhi Police introduced him before the court. Following arguments from both sides and a review of the prosecution’s evidence, including a video taken by an accused accomplice showing a man said to be Sushil engaging in the attack, the judge ordered Kumar to remain detained without bail until October 2021.
