For twenty long years, Undertaker won WrestleMania with 21 streaks until he faced a defeat in 2017.
Today, we dive deep into the life of The Undertaker and know more about him. We have always seen him being scary, but who is he in reality? So, we will unfold who this WWE legend is in reality for that stick with us till the last of this article.
The Undertaker: Childhood and Education
Mark William Calaway, better known as The Undertaker, was born on March 24, 1965, in Houston, Texas. He was the son of Frank Compton Calaway (father) and Betty Catherine Truby (mother) (mother).
Mark was raised with his siblings and has four elder brothers. Unfortunately, his father and one of his brothers have died, but he still has three brothers and his mother.
The WWE legend had a wonderful upbringing with his siblings, with whom he used to play and have a lot of fun. Moreover, Mark’s parents gave him the greatest life possible and even encouraged him to achieve his aspirations.
Mark attended Waltrip High School and was a member of the basketball and football teams. In addition, he used to compete in inter-school sports with the school’s squad.
After graduating from high school in 1983, he enrolled at Angelina College of Texas, where he received a full basketball scholarship. Regardless, his time at Angelina College came to an end when he enrolled at Texas Wesleyan University.
In Texas, he majored in sports management and even played for the Rams for one season. However, Mark dropped out of college in 1986 with the intention of pursuing a basketball career. But, unbeknownst to him, fate had other plans for him, and he would become the greatest WWE wrestler of all time rather than a basketball star.
The Career of The Undertaker
On November 22, 1990, Mark made his WWE debut as The Undertaker. His death-themed gimmick was well accepted by the audience. Similarly, following a loss, The Undertaker would place the beaten opponent’s body in the body bag and transport them backstage.
This gothic-themed gimmick brought a lot of fun to the WWE industry while also increasing the WWE craze among viewers. The legendary Hulk Hogan won his first Royal Rumble in 1991.
At the time, WWE was known as the WWF, and Mark defeated Hulk Hogan in 1991, winning his first WWF Championship at Survivor Series. As a result of his triumph, he became the WWF/youngest WWE’s champion in history. However, Yokozuna broke that record in 1993 by becoming the WWF’s youngest champion.
Mark was put inside a casket by Yokozuna after losing a match to him in 1994, and he genuinely disappeared from WWE for several months. Due to the absence of the WWE legend in the storyline, many fans felt that the period had come to an end. His ailment, however, was the true cause of his seven-month absence. Mark was wounded, and WWE gave him time off to recover.
It was known as the Original Deadman Era from 1994 to 1994. Similarly, from 1996 to 1999, he was a member of the Lord of Darkness and Ministry of Darkness gimmick, or, in other words, the gothic theme.
That was his most legendary period, as he won match after match, and his WWE character was incredibly effective in creating a large fan following.
Return of WWE
The WWE superstar returned as the American Badass after a seven-month hiatus. His character was formerly perceived as a frightening personality, but American Badass changed that.
Every day, the WWE legend would ride in on a Harley Davidson and make a spectacular debut. The most talked-about event was his feud with The Rock and Stone Cold. Mark portrayed him as an American Badass for three years before resuming his role as The Undertaker.
His personality as the dead man was reaching its apex. He was reported to have been put in a casket in one match, and his reappearance reinforced the “Deadman” reputation. It was well-received, as his admirers became further ecstatic after his comeback.
He won his first Royal Rumble battle in early 2007. After defeating Edge in 2008, he regained his world heavyweight title. Mark was having a successful career, winning match after match, until he decided to take a vacation in 2010.
Mark makes a comeback as The Undertaker in 2011. When he returned, he began a feud with Triple H. Unfortunately, that fight was so fierce that even though Mark won, he was carried out of the ring on a stretcher due to injury. His WWE fight continued for the next nine years.
With numerous accomplishments and surprising failures, Mark ultimately chose to leave WWE and retire in 2020.
The Streak Has Come to an End
When discussing Wrestlemania, The Undertaker’s name cannot be avoided. It’s because for twenty years, the undisputed champion won every match.
The career vs. streak match between Shawn Michales and Mark was his most renowned match. Shwan had to leave WWE after losing, and guess what? Shwan was defeated and retired.
Wrestlemania XXVIII, where Swan was the special guest referee and Mark faced Triple H, followed the historic match. This is one of the longest battles in WWE history; both competitors had reached the point when they couldn’t even stand and had no power at all, but the WWE superstar came through and won, extending his winning streak to 20-0.
But it was Wrestlemania 33 that shocked everyone. Everyone expected Undertaker to beat Roman Reigns and extend his winning streak to 22-0. However, after five spears, WWE’s longest streak holder, Roman Reigns, was defeated. Then, for the first time in WWE history, the entire arena fell silent for a minute as a result of astonishment. And with that, the run came to an end.
The WrestleMania legend left his gloves and coat in the ring after the match, and many expected he would retire, but he did not. However, Roman Reigns became everyone’s villain, and everyone began to condemn him.
Wrestlemania 35 was the only time Mark did not appear in a Wrestlemania throughout his nineteen-year career.
Retirement
In 2020, the WWE veteran announced his retirement from the company. The news spread like wildfire, and many WWE superstars paid respect to him on social media.
Despite this, WWE opted to give Mark an iconic retirement because he was the best part of WWE. Mark thanked everyone in his retirement address, and in his final remark, he said, “My time has come to let The Undertaker Rest in Peace.” Mark’s tenure in WWE was honored with a ten-bell salute, and everyone bid him farewell.
