Nelson’s debut play, Eye of God, was presented by Seattle Repertory Theatre in 1992. Then he co-starred with Siobhan Fallon Hogan, Paul Zaloom, and John Mariano in The Unnaturals, a sketch comedy series that aired on HA! from 1989 to 1991.

He portrayed the important character Delmar in the film O Brother, Where Art Thou. Additionally, according to directors Joel and Ethan Coen, he was the only member of the cast or crew to have read Homer’s Odyssey, the book on which the film is largely based.

He has performed in numerous minor roles in movies like Minority Report, Lincoln, and Syriana. Nelson also made an appearance in The Incredible Hulk and Fantastic Four adaptations from Marvel Comics. He portrayed Ralph Myers in the 2019 legal/drama Just Mercy.

Audiobooks, Nelson provided the narration for the 2001 book At the Altar of Speed: The Fast Life and Tragic Death of Dale Earnhardt, Sr. Along with the film versions of his plays The Grey Zone and Eye of God, he has also directed two of his own screenplays, Kansas (1998) and Leaves of Grass (2009).

He was the man behind the camera for the Othello-based film, which was filmed in a modern high school.
