Early Life, Education, and Family | Tyler Skaggs

On July 13, 1991, Tyler Wayne Skaggs was conceived. In Woodland Hills, California, he was born and raised by his parents, Darell and Debbie Skaggs, as an only child. After her divorce from Darell, Debbie got married again to Danny Hetman.

Not to mention that his mother was Santa Monica High School’s softball coach. Tyler also attended Santa Monica High School, his mother’s place of employment in California. Skaggs also participated in school athletics and won the player of the year honor in his junior year.

2013 to 2015

In a three-team deal, the Diamondbacks returned Skaggs to the Angels on December 10, 2013. Hector Santiago went to the Angels, and Adam Eaton went to the Chicago White Sox. In a similar vein, Mark Trumbo and two other players went to the Diamondbacks.

Skaggs met a tragic end after consuming too much fentanyl. Skaggs was agonizingly discovered unconscious in his hotel room on July 1, 2019, in Southlake, Texas. Around 2:18 pm, once they had arrived on the scene, the authorities declared him dead.

On July 4, Tyler was set to pitch in the four-game series against the Texas Rangers. But the first game was postponed following the sad occurrence by the Angels and the Rangers. There were no indications of suicide or malicious intent, the Southlake Police Department stated in a statement.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner began an autopsy the day after his death was declared official. By October 2, 2019, they projected that the autopsy would identify the cause of death. On July 6, 2019, Andrew Heaney became the first pitcher to start the game following Tyler Skaggs’ demise.

After Tyler’s autopsy on August 30, 2019, the Tarrant County Medical Examiner reported that fentanyl, oxycodone, and alcohol were present in his system. Skaggs’ death was ruled an accident after the medical examiner determined that he choked on his own vomit and died from suffocation.

Although Tyler’s family was devastated by his sad death, they were unable to sit still. To further look into the circumstances surrounding his passing, they engaged Texas lawyer Rusty Hardin. After the investigation, one of the Angels’ workers acknowledged giving Skaggs oxycodone. As a result, on October 15, 2020, former Angels communications director Eric Kay was charged in connection with the untimely death of Tyler Skaggs.

An outpouring of grief and mourning was brought on by the sad and untimely death of an exceptional pitcher. Patrick Corbin, who was traded to Arizona alongside Tyler Skaggs, changed his jersey number to 45 during a game on July 2 against the Miami Marlins in remembrance of the late Tyler Skaggs.

At the 2019 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, Mike Trout and Tommy La Stella, the two All-Star representatives for the Angels, also wore No. 45 in remembrance of a close friend and teammate. Similarly, on July 12, 2019, at the first Angels game following Skaggs’ passing, every Angels player wore Tyler’s number 45. Debbie Hetman, Tyler’s mother, delivered the official first pitch in a heartbreaking gesture.

In addition, the Angels players took off their number 45 jerseys after the game and laid them on the ground as a tribute to Tyler. And on Players Weekend, every player in the major league donned a patch with the number 45.

Ryan Braun, Jesse Chavez, Patrick Corbin, Jack Flaherty, Max Fried, Lucas Giolito, Scott Heineman, Mike Moustakas, and Christian Yelich also wore jerseys with Skaggs’ nicknames on the opening night of Players Weekend to celebrate and show their love for Tyler.A couple of his teammates were also seen sporting jerseys with the words “LOVE YOU, TY” printed on them. The Angels also donned a No. 45 patch during the remainder of the 2019 season in his honor.
