Von grew up in an athletic family and was always interested in sports. He joined the DeSoto High School football team after enrolling at DeSoto High School in DeSoto, Texas.

He was also named the District 8-5A Defensive MVP in high school. After finishing high school, he attended Texas A&M University and played football for the Texas A&M Aggies from 2007 to 2010.
