Wil Trapp: Family and Early Years
John Trapp and Liz Trapp welcomed William Alexander Trapp into the world on January 15, 1993 in Columbus, Ohio. Wil also grew up with his two siblings, Christian Trapp, his older brother, and Julia Trapp, his sister.
Regarding his early sporting endeavors and educational endeavors, Trapp attended Lincoln High School. Although Wil only played for the high school for two years, his accomplishments led Lincoln High School to elect to retire his jersey number 20 in 2014.
Most notably, the 27-year-old led the team to its first-ever state championship in 2009 and was an All-American in both of those years.
Trapp later spent time at the United States Soccer Development Academy before enrolling at the University of Akron in 2011.
Wil, in all of his years with the Akron Zips, helped his collegiate club win three MAC titles, two regular-season tournaments, and qualify for the NCAA Tournament.
Trapp decided to go pro at the conclusion of 2012 after only two years with the University of Akron.
Career of Wil Trapp
As a homegrown player, Trapp started his professional career with hometown team Columbus Crew. The Ohio native won 1-0 versus Portland Timbers in an impressive debut.
Wil’s debut was memorable as a result of winning the man of the match award. He continued to play for the team for another fifteen games that season before winning the Breakout Performer of the Year honor.
As a result, Columbus gave the young player the vice-captain role for the upcoming season.
The next year, in his second professional season, the then-21-year-old shattered numerous records. To give an example, at the age of 21 years and 122 days, Trapp became the youngest player in MLS history to serve as a club captain.
Will did this to become the league’s first Homegrown Player to wear the captain’s hat.
Additionally, on September 12, 2014, in a 2-2 tie with Houston Dynamo, the 5 feet 8 midfielder scored his first goal as a professional.
Wil thus had great expectations after having a fantastic second season to take up his game even more.
On the other hand, the American international experienced a number of injuries throughout the 2015 campaign. Trapp missed a number of games as a result, which hurt his performance. Nevertheless, the Ohio native was able to participate in 25 games and contributed once.

However, everything returned to normal in the 2016 campaign after Wil was selected for his first MLS All-Star game.
Trapp therefore became Columbus’ first-ever Homegrown Player to be selected as an All-Star. Trapp was then presented with a contract extension by Crews SC, which he duly accepted and would keep him at the team through the 2020 campaign.
When Trapp was given the captain’s hat in 2017, it was undoubtedly the biggest accomplishment of his career to date.
The onus was therefore on the Ohio native to guide his squad to improved performances. And Wil played in a career-high 40 games, doing just that.
The 5-foot-8 midfielders also earned three MLS team of the week nominations and a career-high five assists.
Overall, Wil’s 2017 turned out to be a really fantastic year for him personally. Trapp continued to lead the squad as captain in 2018 and helped them reach the playoffs.
In addition, he added his second career goal in a 3-2 triumph over Orlando City.
In fact, his shot from almost forty yards out was so outstanding that it was named the MLS Goal of the Week. After that, the American international played for the Crews for another season before starting a new phase of his career.
Nevertheless, Wil had appeared in 205 games by the time he concluded his stay with Columbus, scoring two goals and dishing out 13 assists.
Trapp was thus traded to the newly founded Inter Miami CF, owned by football royalty David Beckham, after serving his hometown team for seven years.
Due to the worldwide Corona Virus (COVID-19) pandemic, just two games have been played in the MLS as of yet, necessitating the league’s suspension until further notice.
Nevertheless, we have every confidence that Trapp and Inter Miami will play admirably once the season resumes.
