Professional life

At the age of five, Steffen started out as a defender for the neighborhood team West Chester United. When he was ten years old, his group’s guardian was unable to attend a game, so he was forced to start in goal. Through high school, he represented FC DELCO in the United States Soccer Development Academy after joining the squad in 2008.

Steffen spent his freshman and sophomore years at Malvern Preparatory School before transferring to Downingtown West High School, where he participated in both the Whippets’ and DELCO’s programs. He received honors for being an all-American and all-PIAA performer when a senior at Downingtown. He was also chosen as the Ches-Mont League MVP. Steffen played for the Union U17 team in 2012 and was an important component of the Philadelphia Union Academy.

On August 13, Steffen was loaned to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the United Soccer League after making one appearance with the Crew.

On May 29, 2013, Steffen was unveiled as a significant recruit for Maryland’s 2013 class. He made his collegiate debut on August 30 in a 3-3 tie against no, making three saves. Steffen would later play all 26 of the Terrapins’ games, stopping seven shots, a career high, on September 24 in a 1-1 tie with Old Dominion.

He continued his winning ways into the playoffs, recovering five times to aid Maryland in winning the 2013 ACC Men’s Soccer Tournament and earning All-Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman Team recognition. In Maryland’s five games at the 2013 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Tournament, Steffen made 18 saves, enabling the Terrapins to go quickly to the final, where they lost to Notre Dame 2-1.

He was voted as the Most Outstanding Defensive Player of the College Cup and was included on the All-Tournament Team. Steffen maintained his position when Maryland progressed to the Big Ten Conference in 2014, playing every minute of the Terrapins’ 22 games in goal.

As the Terrapins won the Big Ten regular-season championship in their first year in the conference, he surrendered just 19 goals and had nine shutouts. Steffen made nine saves and two dissents in a penalty shootout during the elimination rounds, earning him the title of Most Valuable Defensive Player of the 2014 Big Ten Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament.

In his last collegiate match, UMBC defeated the Terrapins to advance to the 2014 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Tournament. After playing in 48 games for the Terrapins, Steffen left Maryland in December 2014 to pursue a career in Germany.
