The nonprofit organization with a presence in Senegal also uses basketball as a platform to include its young people in academic, athletic, and leadership initiatives. In addition to being duped into giving a sizeable payment in exchange for a painting by Rolando Diaz at that charity event, Dirk also consented to go on two dates.

However, Dirk had already fixed his attention on Jessica Olsson before then. Jessica, now known as Jessica Nowitzki, was born in Nanyuki, Kenya, to a Swedish father and a Kenyan mother. Although Nowitzki was born in Wurzburg, Germany, which had no black or African citizens, he never gave any thought to his race. When discussing his first feelings for Jessica, Dirk said,

Why was she so unique? What was it about her that drew me in? She must, first and foremost, be appealing. Obviously, that contributes to it. And I believe that academically, we simply connected. She enjoys sports and the arts. Both of her brothers were professional soccer players. Despite the fact that neither of them had any problems with their race, the media simply would not accept it. It developed into a major public problem as expected.

Media controversy and backlash

Dirk and Jessica kept dating despite the upheaval in the media. On July 13, 2011, one year later, the pair announced their engagement and made their first significant public appearance at the ESPYS awards, arm in arm. But it was their kiss after Dirk won the “Best Male Athlete” and “Best NBA Player” trophies that grabbed the attention of the media, not how they looked.

That quickly caused Twitter to go crazy, and while most of it was shock-related, some of it undoubtedly packed a punch. Naturally, it also reached Dirk. He further added that the NBA award recipient himself had never heard of the discriminatory remarks. “Nobody ever came up to me with it. Everyone who has met my wife has remarked on how amazing she is with me. Therefore, I haven’t directly heard any of that. There are perhaps some people who keep it to themselves. However, I’ve never heard of it directly.

No matter what the public said, Dirk remained true to himself and stuck by Jessica because he cherished her.

When was Dirk and Jessica Nowitzki got married?

Dirk and Jessica wed in a private ceremony a year after the Twitter incident. The marriage took place in traditional services in both Germany and Kenya. In a similar vein, a Kikuyu wedding was held in Kenya, where the community was informed of the daughter’s engagement. After that, family members from both sides mix, and the ceremony ends with a “ruracio,” or discussion of dowry.

The husband wore a dark brown attire with orange accents, as is customary, and the bride wore a traditional Kikuyu dress. Not to mention that they both had never done it before. Olsson didn’t have to worry since Dirk, a friendly and humorous German native, danced to the African music to lighten the mood.

“Some of those images in which I was wearing the suit and wearing a hat were taken at a wedding party that her mother hosted. It was a unique encounter. Obviously, I’ve never participated in anything similar, including the dancing, the entire event, or the local wedding customs.

However, Dirk was very taken aback by his encounter with the defenseless goat. An ancient African custom uses goats, honey, cows, etc. to pay the dowry and show the groom’s status.

The couple has not yet given birth to their three lovely children despite being on their eighth anniversary. In addition to the schooling they must receive, Dirk also wants his kids to be aware of their German and Kenyan roots. Additionally, it explains why the former basketball player occasionally takes his kids to Kenya. He believes that spending time with family is the best method to learn about culture and tradition.

He does, however, also want his kids to learn about social and racial justice. It was also the first thought that came to his thoughts before retiring. Dirk is aware of the negative effects being black in America would have on his boys. To every parent, that is a little frightening. You’re simply trying to prepare your children so that, in the future, if they find themselves in a predicament, they will be able to escape it on their own or make the appropriate choices.

Despite his unconditional devotion for his children, Dirk is a firm dad when necessary. He does not, however, employ the method of punishment that Nowitzki’s father employed on him: the use of a belt. Instead, he raises his kids with love while teaching them respect and discipline.

“I’m attempting to raise my children in a loving environment right now. Therefore, they must demonstrate their authority and respect for you. Nothing is acceptable. That’s not how things operate here.
