Nietzsche had a classical education at the elite Schulpforta school after attending a private preparatory school in Naumburg. He spent two semesters at the University of Bonn following his graduation in 1864. He changed schools and enrolled in Leipzig University’s philology program, which combines the study of literature, linguistics, and history. The writings of philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer had a big impact on him. He made acquainted with Richard Wagner, whose music he greatly loved, while he was living in Leipzig.

Writing and Teaching in the 1870s

Nietzsche joined the faculty of the University of Basel in Switzerland in 1869 as a professor of classical philology. His earliest writings, The Birth of Tragedy (1872) and Human, All Too Human, were released while he was a professor (1878). He also started to become less interested in Schopenhauer’s ideas and classical scholarship and more interested in the principles of contemporary culture. His connection with Wagner had already soured by this point. He resigned from his position at Basel in 1879 due to a neurological condition. You may also like to know about William Wolf Howey.

When not residing at his mother’s home in Naumburg, Nietzsche moved from Switzerland to France to Italy for the most of the ensuing decade. Additionally, he published Beyond Good and Evil in 1886, The Genealogy of Morals in 1887, and Twilight of the Idols in 1887. (1889).

The main ideas of Nietzsche’s philosophy were developed in these writings from the 1880s. One of these was his well-known declaration that “God is dead,” which disavowed Christianity as a significant factor in modern society. His concept of a “super-man” or “over-man” (Übermensch), a person who aspires to exist beyond conventional categories of good and evil, master and slave, and his support for self-perfection through creative force and a “will to power” were among others.

Death and Later Years

While residing in Turin, Italy, in 1889, Nietzsche experienced a mental breakdown. He was mentally incapacitated for the last ten years of his life. Although historians have attributed explanations as diverse as syphilis, a genetic brain disorder, a tumor, and excessive sedative medication usage, the exact cause of his insanity is still unknown. Nietzsche was looked for by his mother in Naumburg and his sister in Weimar after spending time in an asylum. He passed away on August 25, 1900, in Weimar.

Influence and Legacies

A significant influence on 20th-century philosophy, theology, and art is attributed to Nietzsche. Carl Jung, Sigmund Freud, Michel Foucault, and other philosophers, writers, and literary luminaries such as Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre, Thomas Mann, and Hermann Hesse all drew inspiration from his theories on individuality, morality, and the meaning of life.

Less favorably, the Nazi Party of the 1930s and 1940s misrepresented and selectively utilized parts of Nietzsche’s work to further its agenda, which has partially damaged his reputation among later audiences. You may also like to know about Aaliyah.
